Top tips for household waste management Nationwide, almost 80% of household waste goes to landfill. This creates a serious environmental challenge, but if you follow the following tips you can do your bit to help:
- 1. Avoid buying heavily packaged goods
- 2. Try to buy loose fruit and vegetables instead of pre-packed
- 3. Buy concentrated products that use less packaging
- 4. Repair rather than replace household goods
- 5. Buy products such as washing powder in large containers to reduce packaging
- 6. Take your reusable shopping bags with you to the shops every trip
- 7. Try to get off mailing lists for junk mail
- 8. Use refillable and rechargeable products when possible. Eg. Use a refillable ink pen rather than a disposable biro, and rechargeable batteries and cameras.
- 9. Buy products made from recycled materials
- 10. Choose products in packaging that you know can be recycled
- 11. Use and refill your own durable drinks bottle
